This process can be long and taxing, especially if your parent is experiencing ailments. Here are three steps for helping your parents when they are dealing with the disability income process. 

Get the family involved in their current care

One of the many qualifications for receiving social security disability is not be able to sustain yourself by working. This can mean that working is not an option for your parent. To make sure that they are okay, it will be necessary to get the entire family involved. If your parent is not able to cover their rent or mortgage, they may need to move in with someone else or have someone else move in with them. Get together with your close family and have the family pitch in to help with your parent until their disability is approved. 

Go over your parent's assets

Not being able to work is just one of the qualifications for social security disability. Disability is only available for those who need the income in order to be able to live. To determine if your parents will qualify as a person who is in need of the income, you should go over their assets.

Figure out your parent's current savings, investments, real estate holdings, and other income. This can be easily done via tax forms. Be sure that any accounts that your parents are on is included, even accounts that are not only theirs or accounts that they do not yet use.
